Wat Chedi Luang’s main significance is that it housed the Emerald Buddha for a short time before the relocation to Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. The temple was built 600 years ago and at the time boasted a huge ‘chedi’ that dominated the skyline.

However, either an earthquake or King Taksin’s assault on Burmese invaders destroyed the chedi and ruined much of the temple. Neither has been fully restored. Despite this, the base of the chedi is an impressive 60 meters wide and it is more than 50 meters high.

Wat Chedi Luang boasts a reclining Buddha image and a reproduction of the Emerald Buddha. It also boasts a number of stone Buddha images alongside numerous ornate elephant statues. The temple is also home to the ‘Lak Muang’ - the city’s main spirit house. This is a good place to visit, but other destinations might have higher priority if you have limited time.
